Drafting Jobs

January 6th, 2012

The demand for CAD (computer aided design) and more specifically drafting jobs have continued to grow over the last several years. Many people who are unfamiliar with the technology believe that it is nothing more than simply creating digital designs, however this couldn’t be farther from the truth. In reality, there are a number of unique CAD jobs available.

Types of CAD Jobs

A CAD drafter essentially prepare technical drawings and plan. These plans are used by production and construction engineers to build a finished product. These products range from the tallest buildings to smallest microchips. Drafters create the visual guidelines that will specify details such as the dimensions, procedures, and materials that will be used. The drafter is responsible for melding the information that is given to them from scientists, surveyors, engineers, architects, and the like. There are a variety of different specialties that a CAD technician could have including: aeronautics, architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical, and process piping.

An aeronautical CAD drafter creates engineering drawings that are detailed plans and specifications that will be used in the manufacturing of goods such as missiles and aircraft.

An architectural CAD operator will create structural features for construction projects. Some CAD operators will specialize even further based upon the type of structure (residential or commercial) or material being used (masonry, wood, steel, or reinforced concrete). An electrical CAD drafter will deal primarily with layout diagrams that are used be electricians and workers who deal with electrical equipment such as power plants and communication centers.

Civil CAD technicians create relief and topographical maps that can be used to aid in construction and civil engineering projects. These would include things like water systems, sewage systems, pipelines, highways, bridges, and the like.

Pipeline (Process Piping) drafters focus primarily on creating the layout of gas fields, refineries, chemical plants and related projects.

Team Rebuilding – What You Need To Know

January 9th, 2011

Normally, people talk about team building – a process that requires a leader to build his/her team in order to achieve the goal or task or objective assigned to him/her. This process is quite common if you are starting new.

Team rebuilding is a process of regrouping and recreating the team that was built before. Instances where you need such team rebuilding is when:

  1. Key members of a team left
  2. When that particular team leader is reassigned with a new task and given a new group of staff to work with
  3. When that team leader move on to a new organization and taking up new job

During this process, the team leader must possess great skills and capabilities to reconstruct the team. He or she must have great managerial and leadership skills to start a new team. Important issues to deal with are related to identifying tasks, process flow of achieving the tasks, staff skills, motivation and commitment.

This process can be painful and would take longer time especially if the leader has grown the team member capabilities and later lost it due to resignation or transfer.  A much more painful event would be a lost of a team member whom you have groom and train to be a person that can lead and depend on.

In these instances, few alternatives are available and one of them is to hire new staff with the same capabilities. Hiring new team member is considered a faster solution. Normally, I would prefer to train and groom a staff that had shown potential to be a leader one day. However, if the task and objective at hand require you to quickly have a subordinate that you can rely on, then you got no choice but need to hire. Training and grooming takes time but it would definitely pay off in the long term.

Have the right knowledge and skills, you can survive anywhere

December 19th, 2010

Yesterday, I have a long discussion with my immediate supervisor on how we can move on to achieve our goal or objective set for the division in the upcoming year. Our situation currently is quite tough in view that:

  1. The business strategy for 2011 is 360 degree different than the previous 2 years. A lot of focus is given to big tickets accounts. What is that means there would be a lot of customization to our system.
  2. The organization chart is also being mapped and changed to suit those strategies.
  3. During this transition period, few key team members left the organization. Therefore, we are short of resources to cope with the business demand.

During this period, I found that having the right knowledge on leadership and management skills are very important. Because of those changes, the new situation demand a manager or a leader that can quickly adapt to changes and drive the current team to a new level in order to be in line to the new business strategy. The situation also required you as a leader or a manager to re-build your team if your team member leaves the organization and to be replaced with someone new.

I am fortunate to learn and acquire business skills during my part-time business period last time. I practice those business skills together with my leadership skills. The knowledge on leadership I acquired after I attended a leadership course in 2007. I am truly grateful to learn that knowledge especially on POLC (Plan, Organize, Lead and Control). Of course, adapting to changes is also one of the most difficult parts. However, even though it is tough, but I managed to adapt it quite fairly reasonable after a month or so.

During this transition period, I quickly map a new plan to fit the new business strategy, organize and sell those new plan to my current team members especially the team leaders to start buying in and adapt. Then, I started to implement the new approach. Even though, there were some discomforts at first, but having to know the final objective is key to everyone as my team started to get in sync. I ensure I pass and share the knowledge to my immediate team leaders. This is to ensure that when I’m not around, the job still gets done. Well, this is not so smooth in other departments or teams. Therefore, my immediate supervisor, who is also managing those teams found it difficult to move forward.

In conclusion, if you are currently a manager or a team leader or someone who is aspire to be one in the future, starts acquiring and practicing these skills set. Regardless where you work or your job situation would be, it won’t matter anymore because you can survive. The most important person now is you.
